Of the various projects in the pipeline, the restart of Astron Energy’s 100,000 barrels a day (b/d) Cape Town refinery will almost certainly be the first to be realised. Astron (a subsidiary of the global commodity trader Glencore) bought the refinery from Chevron in 2019 but the plant has been out of action since it was damaged by a fire in mid-2020.

Glencore’s Astron Energy will this year reopen the Cape Town oil refinery amid a "strong commercial case" to bring the operation back online.
