Although Cameroon, the largest palm oil producer in Central Africa, produced more than 450,000 tons in 2020, it still imports about 60,000 tons a year to meet its domestic demand. Most of the imported palm oil comes from Indonesia, Malaysia and Gabon.
Transcriptome of peanut kernel and shell reveals the mechanism
Peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) is one of the most important widely grown oil-crops, providing 20% of the global cooking oil and 11% of protein production annually 1.After flowering and fertilization
The chemical composition of dietary fiber in peanut mainly included cellulose, hemicellulose, pectin, and lignin; the dietary fiber mainly existed in peanut shell, peanut kernel (cake), and peanut stems and leaves; the amount of dietary fiber in peanut shells was the largest, about 65–80%, that in peanut cake was 4–6% and that in peanut stems and leaves was about 21.8% (Liao 2004).
Sub-Saharan African Maize-Based Foods - Processing Practices
Compositional features of maize and local processing techniques affect the nutritional content and bioavailability of nutrients. For instance, the pericarp and germ of maize are usually sieved out as chaff in the preparation of most traditional foods, leading to loss of a large portion of proteins, lipids, minerals and vitamins that are present in those kernel structures.
The peanuts are first shelled and cleaned. They are then roasted at 425°F (218°C) for 40-60 minutes either a) on trays in an oven, the nuts being turned by hand from time to time or b) in equipment similar to that used for roasting coffee. This small rotary roaster allows each nut to become uniformly roasted.
Peanut shell biochar improves soil properties and peanut kernel quality
3.1 Peanut physiology, yield and kernel grade. Our plots generated pod yield between 4.1 and 4.8 t ha −1.This was higher than the yield on most local farms (1.25–2.5 t ha −1) and was comparable to the yield of peanut on the Kingaroy Research Facility in seasons with very good growth conditions (4–5 t ha −1) (Rachaputi, personal observation).
instead of selling fresh fruit bunches (FFB) to agro-industries or local processors (Nkongho et al., 2014). Few palm oil agro- industrial companies in Cameroon have welcomed the introduction of the Round Table for Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) and are working to get the RSPO certification. This move has been supported by WWF Cameroon and WWF Gabon.
- How many oil palm plantations are there in Cameroon?
- In Cameroon, oil palm plantations cover more than 170,000 ha of national land, including 70,000 ha of industrial plantations and 100,000 ha of village plantations.
- Will Cameroon continue to import palm oil in 2020?
- For 2020, the Cameroonian government has authorized an import of 70,000 MT of CPO. In Cameroon, the area under the oil palm is likely to continue to increase for a couple of reasons. First, Cameroon is a net importer of palm oil and with a growing population, its demand is also increasing.
- Does palm oil expansion & deforestation affect Informal mills in South Cameroon?
- Ordway, EM., Naylor, RL., Nkongho, RN., Lambin, EF. (2019) Oil palm expansion and deforestation in Southwest Cameroon are associated with the Proliferation of informal mills. Nature Communications 10, Article no. 114. Poku, K. (2002) Small-scale palm oil processing in Africa. Vol.48. (FAO, Rome, 2002).
- Where do oil palms grow in Cameroon?
- It is estimated that in Southwest Cameroon, a top producing palm oil region of Africa, 67% of oil palm expansion from 2000-2015 occurred at the expense of forest (Ordway et al., 2019). Many regions in Cameroon have the required growing conditions for oil palm. South-West, South, and Littoral are the most attractive regions for investors.
