Performance Evaluation of a Screw Press for Extraction of Groundnut
screw press is employed. The oil is used locally for cooking, lighting and as body cream. It is also used for production of soap, cosmetic and margarine. Further processing improves the quality of the oil (Kheiri, 1985). Good quality edible oil is fresh, pure, free from odours, and any sign of rancidity.
In this research, the modified screw design is considered in order to improve the oil capacity, the efficiency and number of cycles to failure and then to reduce the von-Mises stress, deformation and fatigue stress of automatic oil press machine by changing the pitch of screw shaft for peanut oil screw press expeller. Development of a laboratory model screw press for peanut oil expression
Peanut oil is a pale yellow oil with a distinctive nutty taste and odor obtained from the processing of peanut kernel. It is a non-drying oil containing about 4% arachidonioc acid; 62% oleic acid, 23% linoleic acid, 8% palmitic acid and; 5% stearic acid. Other fatty acid constituent of the oil include behenic and lignoceric acids, each of about
A shaft speed of not more than 90 rpm was found to be suitable for working the screw press while the clearance between the shaft and the barrel was 3 mm.Quality evaluation of the product showed

Conclusions. A model screw press was designed and fabricated. The unit was tested and found capable of expressing oil from small quantities of the oil-seed, i.e. peanut. The crude oil obtained was found to be of high quality as its characteristics were comparable to literature values for peanut oil.
The machine gave a better performance at the speed of 60 revolutions per minute and improvement in the design can be achieved by incorporation a heating chamber along the expeller barrel. In this paper, the author intends to design the screw shaft and to calculate the stresses of peanut oil screw press oil expeller.
Peanut Oil Processing Technology
The conditioned peanut kernels are transported by a conveyor to the twin-screw press for cold pressing; the cold-pressed crude oil and cold-pressed peanut meal with low denaturation will be obtained. After the cold-pressed crude oil is filtered with frame filter, product oil is obtained, which will be packaged by a filling machine to form cold-pressed peanut oil products ( Fig. 3.8 ).
The oil extraction by mechanical pressing is the most common method for continuous treatment of oleaginous seeds without solvent. Different types of presses can be used depending on the purpose (expeller, expander, and twin-screw extruder) and on the capacity range (3 kg h−1 to 150 t day−1). At the laboratory scale, many authors have highlighted the effect of operating parameters (screw
- What is a VATS screw press machine?
- The VATS screw press machine consists of three main components including the hopper, the steamer, and the pressing unit, and was operated at temperature of 90, 110 and 130°C, shaft speed of 30, 45, and 60 rpm and heating time of 10, 15, 20 minutes.
- Can a variable-pitch tapered-shaft press improve palm fruit oil extraction efficiency?
- This work focuses on development of a variable-pitch tapered-shaft (VATS)screw pressfor enhancing palm fruit oil extraction efficiency.
- How can screw press technology improve palm fruit extraction efficiency?
- Palm fruit o il extraction is a difficult task to undertake. Screw press technology offers a solution to its extraction. However, most screw press available requires high power input for effective operation, thus affecting cost. Therefore, there is a need for improvement in order to limit cost and increase extraction efficiency.
- What are the limitations of a screw press?
- Among all, a screw press is mostly used due to its simplicity and conveniency. One major limitation of a screw press is pressure build up during operation, causing shaft rolling and operational failure. In the past decades, efforts have been made to improve the efficiency of a screw press.
