Sunflower Oil Winterization Using the Cellulose-Based
During the winterization process, between the wax crystallization and the filtration phases, sunflower oil contains other components affecting the quality, color and other oil properties. This paper presents the results of monitoring the operation of an industrial pressure leaf filter, which is a part of the winterization process during the
The peroxide value of sunflower oil increased from 3.3 meq/kg to 6.7 meq/kg during the winterization processes by using kieselguhr (0.6%) at the end of 12 h (Figure 3). This increase was also higher for the corn oil during winterization process in which kieselguhr was used as filter aid material.
Winterization | K-TEK
The K-TEK`s winterization plant operates continuously. The process sections are cooling, crystallization and filtration. The winterization is a technological process for removal of non- cold resistant stearines and waxes of vegetable oil. These higher melting glycerides give reason to turbidity, when the oil is exposed to temperatures below 10°C.
The chemical composition and percentage of waxes in sunflower oil are presented in relation to the crude oil quality obtained from decorticated or undecorticated sunflower seed. Three methods of winterizing are described: the conventional method with separation by filters, crystallization with a wetting agent and separation by centrifuge and winterization in solvent. We also comment on methods

Sunflower Oil Winterization Using the Cellulose-Based
Waxes, phospholipids, free fatty acids, peroxides, aldehydes, soap, trace metals and moisture present in crude sunflower oil have a negative effect on the oil quality and are, therefore, removed during the refining process. Waxes crystallizing at low temperatures are removed during winterization by cooling and filtration.
Two filter cakes from the sunflower oil winterization process were used to recover, fractionate and characterize their oil and wax fractions. Both samples presented high lipid content (75.35 and 58.21% dry basis) composed of 88.1 and 89.1% oil and 11.9 and 8.9% waxes.
- How to winterize sunflower oil?
- The winterization of sunflower oil takes place after the neutralization phase. The neutral oil was cooled and treated with a dilute sodium hydroxide solution. Then, the oil was crystallized by slow mixing in tanks at 8 °C. After the crystallization, a part of the waxes, along with the soap, were separated at low temperature.
- Do cellulose-based filtration aids remove wax during winterization phase?
- The accompanying minor components play an extremely important role in wax removal during winterization phase [ 65 ]; consequently, total phospholipids and soap content in the oils before and after filtration assisted by the cellulose-based aids were examined.
- Do cellulose-based filtration aids remove waxes from sunflower oil?
- According to the results shown in Table 2, waxes content in sunflower oils after filtration (W_out) using cellulose-based filtration aids was very low. Waxes were practically completely removed from sunflower oil in all oil samples (98.97¨C99.42%, compared to oil samples before filtration).
- Does a pressure leaf filter work in the refining of sunflower oil?
- This paper presents the results of monitoring the operation of an industrial pressure leaf filter, which is a part of the winterization process during the refining of sunflower oil. The filtration process is assisted by the addition of two filtration aids, one for pre-coat and the other for the body-feed application.
