Solvent Extraction - AOCS
Background One of the most basic needs of mankind is an abundant and reliable food supply. In the modern world, one major source of protein and vegetable oil is from oilseeds, particularly the soybean – an abundant resource which is largely processed using solvent extraction, an efficient and reliable means to separate the high-protein meal solids from the high-energy edible oil.
The mechanical pressing method to remove oil was common until the early 1900s. After this, the solvent extraction plants began to prevail, especially in Europe, because of their greater effectiveness in soy oil removal. As a result, more than 90% of the world's soy oil was solvent extracted by 1970. Global Soybean Oil Consumption
Recent advances in green soybean oil extraction: A review
According to USDA [1], the production of soybeans worldwide in 2020/2021 was about 360,000 thousand metric tons. The soybean seeds are mainly destined for protein, edible oil, and biodiesel production. The main components of the seeds are proteins (40 wt%), lipids (20 wt%), carbohydrates (15 wt%), and ashes (5 wt%).
The flow rates and composition of inert solids (a), solvent (b), and soybean oil (c) in all input and output streams of each stage were calculated based on the aforementioned considerations, taking into account the inlet data (feed: F, x aF, x bF, and x cF; solvent: S, y aS, y bS, and y cS), and the desired oil recovery in the final extract (E 1).
Green solvents and technologies for oil extraction from oilseeds
Oilseeds are crucial for the nutritional security of the global population. The conventional technology used for oil extraction from oilseeds is by solvent extraction. In solvent extraction, n-hexane is used as a solvent for its attributes such as simple recovery, non-polar nature, low latent heat of vaporization (330 kJ/kg) and high selectivity to solvents. However, usage of hexane as a
Soybean or soya bean is a legume originated from East Asia and moved to South and North America. It has numerous applications and edible uses. Soya is used to produce edible protein, soya milk, soy sauce, soya bean oil and many other applications. Soya bean is the main ingredient of and resource of protein in feed milling industry.
Whole soybean protein extraction processes: A review
Firstly, the protein was extracted from the whole soybean flour, without the oil extraction step (Figure 1a). Typically, a soybean seed contains approximately 36-40% protein in its composition [23

- How to extract soybean oil?
- Soybean oil can be obtained by expelling or using an organic solvent. Although, the employment of solvent will always follow the expelling to increase lipid extraction yield .
- Which solvent is used to extract crambe seed oil?
- The pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) was assessed by Mello et al. using methyl acetate as a solvent to extract crambe seed oil. A higher extraction yield was achieved than n -hexane and ethanol in Soxhlet extraction. Still, the soybean oil extraction using the same method with ethanol was performed by Rodrigues et al. .
- Which solvent is used in soybean oil production?
- Solvent extraction and expelling are the main processes used in soybean oil production. Hexane is currently the leading solvent in extraction , . This solvent has a high solubility for oil extraction, availability, low price, low boiling point, and heat of vaporization .
- Which oil cake contains more residual oil?
- The extraction of oil from oilseeds is either by mechanical pressing or by solvent extraction. The expeller pressed oil cake contains more resid-ual oil than the desolventized cake. The chemical compositions of major oil cakes (solvent extracted) in the world are given in the Table 13.2.
