The Astron Energy Refinery
We have implemented an energy efficiency program to reduce the energy requirements at our refinery by between 10-20% by 2023. Water is essential to our operations and we are committed to the responsible use and conservation of water. 80% of the water needed for our refinery process comes from recycled water from a local treatment plant.
Of the various projects in the pipeline, the restart of Astron Energy’s 100,000 barrels a day (b/d) Cape Town refinery will almost certainly be the first to be realised. Astron (a subsidiary of the global commodity trader Glencore) bought the refinery from Chevron in 2019 but the plant has been out of action since it was damaged by a fire in mid-2020.
