COMMERCIAL BIODIESEL PRODUCTION IN SOUTH AFRICA: A PRELIMINARY ECONOMIC
UCT, Terry Booysen from Biodiesel One, Estelle le Roux from Bester Grain & Feed Exchange and Melumzi Nontangana from the Cape Town City Council. Also a special thanks to all my friends, especially Anja and Carel, for the good times during the year. I would also like to acknowledge the funding that I received for my research from the NRF.
The produced sunflower biodiesel had an acid number of 0.2 mg KOH/g which was below the standard limit as seen in Table 6. A similar value was found for biodiesel produced from clean sunflower oil [77]. This property indicates the presence of FA in the biodiesel, the increase in acid number is caused by organic acids and oxidation.

Production of biodiesel from sunflower oil using highly catalytic
1. Introduction. Biodiesel is recognized as the most promising alternative fuel since they are biodegradable, renewable and non-toxic [1], [2].Biodiesel is produced through transesterification, wherein, a fat (triglyceride of fatty acid) and a small alcohol (methanol or ethanol) are reacted in the presence of a catalyst into a monoester of fatty acid and glycerin [3].
The viscosity of the sunflower oil was 33.4 ± 0.3 mm 2 /s, and the transesterification process reduced this property remarkably, as shown in Table 7. The biodiesel production process was performed without acidic transesterification since the FFA content of sunflower oil was acceptable for a direct alkaline transesterification reaction.

The use of feedstock crops for the production of biodiesel suggests that biodiesel production may have a major impact on the scarce freshwater resource in South Africa. This paper aimed to assess the green plus blue water footprints (WFgreen+blue) of biodiesel produced from sunflower in South Africa using the Global Water Footprint Standard approach. The green (WFgreen) and blue water
The aim of this work is the synthesis of fatty acid methyl esters from sunflower oil (SFO). The optimization of the most important factors affecting the yield of the reaction such as time and temperature of the reaction is established. The biodiesel produced is analyzed using Fourier transform infrared and gas chromatography–mass spectroscopy
