Analysis of the Sunflower Value Chain in Zambia’s Eastern
main purpose of this study is to describe the sunflower oil chain from the input supply to retail level, and to identify the major challenges affecting smallholder sunflower production and marketing. Edible oils are sourced mainly from vegetable products and in Zambia, the major oilseed used in the production of edible oils is soybeans which accounts for 60% of local production, cotton seed oil extraction accounts for 19% while sunflower oil accounts for 15%. The remaining 6% is sourced from minor oilseeds such as ground nuts.
Oil seed production in Tanzania mainly focuses on ground nuts (40%), sunflower (36%), sesame (15%), cotton (8%) and palm oil (1%). More than half of vegetable oil consumed in Tabora and Tanzania as a whole is imported due to insufficient domestic production. The population of western Tanzania is approximtely 5.8 million in 2012.
