The fatty acid methyl esters extraction of sunflower oil using a CLEXTRAL BC 45 co-rotating twin-screw extruder increased oil extraction yield up to 96% and decreased residual oil content in cake meal below 5% under solvent-to-solid ratio of 0.70 (Amalia Kartika et al., 2003).
A new process, in which sunflower seeds are pressed in a twin-screw extruder, is examined here. The screw profile was first optimized. Oleic sunflower seeds were crushed and 80% of the oil was removed. The resultant oil was of good quality, with acid numbers below 2 mg KOH/g of oil and total phosphorus contents of about 100 ppm.

The design consists of a pilot-scale partially intermeshing, counter-rotating twin-screw extruder-press with a barrel composed of vertical, parallel plates varying in diameter. The twin-screw press operated at a feeding rate of 50–58 kg/h and attained a high oil recovery of 94% for dehulled sunflower seeds.
