The oil from soybeans is extracted using commercial hexane in solvent extraction. Up to 90% of the solvent remaining in the extracted oil evaporates and is then collected for reuse. The first project was to learn how to grow soybeans in Sri Lanka. Soybean Production Project. Prior to 1972, except for sporadic variety testing and agronomic research, most of the soybeans in Sri Lanka were grown in small home-garden plots for home use. In 1972 the soybean was re-introduced to farmers, who planted 211 acres.
The imported quantity of soybean in 2010 was 710mt and it has been increased up to 6,418mt in 2018. In line with the increase of imported quantity of soybean, the import bill has also been increased from Rs.94.55 million in 2010 to Rs.446.99 million in 2018.
