It can be classified as an oil crop due to the high oil content (15-20%). Soybean can be cultivated in dry and intermediate zone in Sri Lanka, although it is limited to the Anuradhapura and
Soybean seeds contribute a significant percentage of world vegetable oil annually (Wang et al., 2020) and are a primary source of meal protein for animal feed. Domestication of cultivated soybean occurred in East Asia c. 6000–9000 yr ago from Glycine soja (Sieb. and Zucc.), the wild ancestor (Carter et al., 2004).

As a result, in 2010. the cultivation extent was about 4,500 ha (Agstat, 201 1). Figure 1: Extent of cultivation and production of soybean in Sri Lan ka for 1961-2011. Presently, there are only
Abstract. Seed maturation or seed filling is a phase of development that plays a major role in the storage reserve composition of a seed. In many plant seeds photosynthesis plays a major role in this process, although oilseeds, such as castor (Ricinus communis), are capable of accumulating oil without the benefit of photophosphorylation to augment energy demands.
Castor oil – Cliara Essential Oils
Pressed from Castor Seeds sourced locally, Castor Oil is rich in omega fatty acids, Vitamin E and is also anti-fungal and anti-bacterial. Cold-pressed Castor Oil is a great massage oil for the scalp and serves a variety of purposes such as moisturizing the scalp, treating dandruff, stimulating hair growth, and fends off split ends.
Medium oil alkyd resins with 50% oil length were prepared from Glycerol, Phthalic anhydride and Triglyceride oils (Castor and Soybean oils respectively) using monoglyceride method. 50% oil length implies that the ratio of the oil to the total alkyd mixture is 1:2 since oil length could be described as the percentage by weight of triglyceride oil to the total alkyd resin mixture [25].
Soybean, Protein, and Oil Production Under Stress
The soybean is a suitable source of oleic and linoleic acid; even if the soy oil is partially hydrogenated, it has 25% linoleic and 3% linolenic acid. It is, as previously mentioned, a good source of protein, oil, and carbohydrates. The rate of amino acids in soybeans is significant and is a complement to cereals.
However, the extent cultivated and production of soybean in Sri Lanka has drastically dropped in the recent years. Owing to the dent in local production, imports of soybean as well as soy oil have increased significantly in the previous decade. The imported quantity of soybean in 2010 was 710mt and it has been increased up to 6,418mt in 2018.
- What genes are up-regulated during rapid accumulation of oil in soybean seeds?
- The expression levels of genes in metabolic pathways such as carbon fixation, photosynthesis, glycolysis, and fatty acid biosynthesis were significantly up-regulated during the rapid accumulation of oil in developing soybean seeds.
- Does seed oil synthesis change during soybean seed development?
- Soybean is one of the most important oil crops in the world. Revealing the molecular basis and exploring key candidate genes for seed oil synthesis has great significance for soybean improvement. In this study, we found that oil accumulation rates and gene expression levels changed dynamically during soybean seed development.
- Which co-expression module is most positively correlated with soybean seed oil content?
- Through weighted correlation network analysis, we identified six co-expression modules associated with soybean seed oil content and the pink module was the most positively correlated ( r = 0.83, p = 7 × 10 -4) network.
- Which genes control oil and fatty acid content in soybean seeds?
- Among these, three genes ( GmABI3b, GmNFYA and GmFAD2-1B) have been shown to control oil and fatty acid content in soybean seeds, and other newly identified candidate genes would broaden our knowledge to understand the molecular basis for oil accumulation in soybean seeds.
