The screw configuration and the operating conditions had an important influence on the oil extraction yield, the energy input and the quality of oil extracted during the extrusion of sunflower seeds. Higher oil extraction yield and specific mechanical energy were reached as the reversed screw elements were moved with increased spacing between elements and with smaller pitch elements.
When oleic sunflower oil is expressed, a longer reversed pitch screw improves oil extraction yield, which can rise 80% in the optimized operating conditions (Lacaze-Dufaure et al., 1999a). When two reversed pitch screws are used, the oil extraction yield increases with the distance between them and with the decrease of the screw pitch (Amalia Kartika et al., 2005a).

Oleic sunflower seeds were crushed and 80% of the oil was removed. The resultant oil was of good quality, with acid numbers below 2 mg KOH/g of oil and total phosphorus contents of about 100 ppm.
