The low demand for certified seed is also partly caused by the dual problem of high seed rate in groundnuts (80 – 100 kgs needed per ha, depending on variety) and low seed multiplication ratio.

Groundnut commercialisation trends in Malawi – Future agricultures
The following flowchart presents the broad trends in groundnuts commercialisation in Malawi: 1980s: During this time, groundnuts were being produced, but on a small scale and primarily involving women; while men concentrated on tobacco production. Groundnuts were sold to the Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (ADMARC).
Most of the companies producing oil in Malawi do not produce for export but rely heavily on the import of crude oil when the country has the potential to produce it. In the Malawi Economic Growth Strategy (2003) and later the MGDS (2007), agro-processing, which includes food processing, was identified as a high potential sector with tobacco, tea, sugar and cotton identified as the key sub-sectors.
