Ethiopia’s agro ecology and sunflower seed production
Its seeds are used as snacks and feeds for birds and small animals. Sunflower types differ by oil content and seed size. Oil seeds are relatively small and black with low body structure and high oil content while confectionary seeds are large in size, which are usually black with white stripes, with lower oil content and large in size.
It has also affected the sunflower seed oil content (Ashraf and Tufail 1995; El-Kheir et al. 2004; Flagella et al. 2004; Di Caterina et al. 2007). Increasing levels of salinity have led to the reduction of seed number per head and weight of seeds per plant and significantly reduced seed yield (Flagella et al. 2004; Di Caterina et al. 2007).

Abstract. Nine oilseeds namely noug, gomenzer, linseed, soybean, sunflower, castor, sesame, ground nut and cotton are important in Ethiopia for edible oil consumption. During the last 60 years, 156 varieties with their production practices were registered. Sesame contributes significantly to the foreign currency earnings next to coffee.
Sunflower is one of the most important oil crops in Ethiopia in terms of edible oil and holds significant promise for improvement and development improved varieties. The present study was initiated to study the genetic diversity and performance of sunflower genotypes that enables to harness its seed yield and oil content improvement by using 25 genotypes including two standard checks namely
Effect of honeybee pollination on seed and fruit yield
Around Holeta (Central Ethiopia) the maximum seed yield was 600kg hectare 19,2 0 using honeybees as pollinator of niger; while 16700kg/hectare was obtained in Tigray , Northern Ethiopia. 16
Currently some private farmers has started to grow due to high demand of raw material for oil-millers and thus its coverage is started to increase from time to time; the country possesses large agricultural land suitable for sunflower production. In Ethiopia, research on sunflower was started in the late 1960’s; however the research comes to
